What cookies are

The cookies we use

1. Strictly necessary

Needed for the site to work: security and anti-spam protection, load balancing, and remembering that you dismissed a notice. These cannot be switched off in our systems.

2. Preferences

Remember your choices, such as light or dark mode and your last-used calculator units. Stored in your browser’s local storage and never sent to us.

3. Analytics

Help us count visits and see which articles are useful, in aggregate. We use these to decide what to write next and what to fix.

4. Advertising

Set by advertising partners, which may include Google AdSense and its partners, to limit how often you see an ad, measure campaigns and — where permitted — personalise what you see. Google’s use of advertising cookies is described in its own policies, and you can manage personalisation at Google Ads Settings.

Your choices

• Use the cookie banner, where shown, to accept or reject non-essential cookies.
• Block or delete cookies in your browser settings — Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge all provide controls under Privacy.
• Use private browsing, or a browser that blocks third-party cookies by default.
• Opt out of personalised advertising through your Google account settings or your device’s ad-tracking controls.

Blocking analytics and advertising cookies will not break the site. Blocking strictly necessary cookies may.

How long they last

Session cookies disappear when you close the browser. Persistent cookies last from a few days to two years depending on their purpose; preference storage lasts until you clear your browser data.
